The characters: Dr. Sara Tancredi

Sara Tancredi is the second eldest daughter of the Governor of Illinois, Frank Tancredi. Due to her father's absence during most of her childhood and her mother's bitterness towards her father, Sara does not have much of a relationship with her father.

Sara has wanted to be a doctor since she was very young. While at Northwestern University in Chicago, she was introduced to the works of Mahatma Gandhi and decided to become a humanitarian. However, Sara later became a morphine addict and would steal morphine from the hospital's supply during her shift. During this time, she also developed relationships with other addicts and on several occasions, her father, the Governor had to use his influence to keep her and her boyfriends out of jail.

Three years ago, while Sara was meandering through a residential neighbourhood with her boyfriend, they witnessed a car accident. When she approached the boy that had been hit, another witness asked for her help after she noticed Sara's hospital staff ID. However, Sara could not help since she was impaired by the drugs she had taken earlier. Devastated by her own inability to help, Sara immediately sought to change her lifestyle. She quit using drugs and set out to accomplish what she had intended to do during college.

18 months after the accident, Sara attended one of the group therapy meetings for ex-addicts. There, she expressed her intention on getting back to work. After the meeting, she met Captain Brad Bellick who was also present at the meeting. When Bellick told her that there was a job vacancy for a doctor at Fox River State Penitentiary, and simultaneously asked her out to dinner, she declined and thanked him for the referral.
